Definition

When a supervisor takes over a teacher's problem.

In the past this method was used as a first resort rather than a last resort. It was meant to control teachers.

Overview

  • The teacher will leave with a concrete plan
  • Straightforward assistance given by the supervisor
  • Should only be used for certain situtions

Supervisors Sequence

  • Identify the problem
  • Ask teacher for input
  • Understand the teacher
  • Mentally find solution
  • State the solution
  • Ask teacher for input
  • Modify and detail expectations
  • Summarize and follow up

When to use Directive Control

  • Teachers are functioning at very low levels
  • Teachers don't have awareness or knowledge of situtation
  • When teacher involvement is not needed
  • In an emergency

  • Limits professional growth of teacher
  • To controlling/ forthright
  • Only used on occasion
  • Consideration of time
