WITH VISUAL MODELS

BEFORE INSTRUCTION

STUDENTS PRODUCE A REPRESENTATION OF A CONCEPT

Teacher meets with students to use their model to ask discrepant questions

Students who have been trained in questioning can ask challenge each other's models as well.

Conceptual change happens gradually. The model is revised as learning continues.

CHALLENGES

TIME, CLASSROOM LOGISTICS, PREPARING QUESTIONS AHEAD OF CONFERENCE OPPORTUNITIITIES

EXAMPLE

SUPPOSE YOU HAVE A STUDENT DRAW A CELL PHONE DIAGRAM

You notice the student has words, numbers, and pictures floating through the air. Your learning objective is for students to understand that we transmit data digitally.

You may ask a discrepant question like: How does the picture move through the air? That will hopefully start the student on a new thought path.
