EPIDERMOLYSIS BULLOSA

SKIN DISORDER

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Hair loss
  • Blisters around eyes and nose, around mouth, in throat, on skin
  • Tooth decay
  • Hoarse cough, breathing issues
  • Milia- tiny white bumps or pimples
  • Nail loss or deformed nails

The disease causes the skin to blister and peel, often leading to large sores that bleed

Who Is Likely To Develop It?

Having a family history of EB is the major risk factor for developing the rare disorder

TREATMENTS

  • Treatment involves treating the symptoms, such as draining blisters
  • Open wounds are covered with gauze or absorbent foam silicone dressings
  • Daily applications of prescribed ointment are often used for open or partially healed sores

Quality Of Life?
People endure infections, dehydration, malnutrition, anemia, deformities, constipation, eye disorders, skin cancers, constant irritation

LIFE EXPECTANCY

  • An adult with the disease is expected to have a normal life-span depending on how severe the disease is
  • An infant with a severe form of the infection may not survive. Many of these babies die in early childhood

How Does A Person Get It?

It's a rare disorder; it's usually inherited

  • There is no known cure for epidermolysis bullosa
  • Some people with EB can develop blisters inside the body-- like the stomach, mouth, and esophagus
  • Most cases of EB are hereditary
  • Surgical treatment may be necessary for EB
