FACTS
*Conversion disorder is a neurological condition that causes physical symptoms -- like a paralyzed arm -- even though doctors can’t find any injury or other physical condition to explain them.

  • Loss of hearing
  • Bad balance

  • Women and young adults have the highest chance to have this
  • There are 14-22 cases every 100,000 people

  • You can't be faking them

  • Occurs in 2.2% of females and 2.5% of males
  • Usually starts at ages 12-13
  • More than 200,000 cases per year in the US

FACTS

  • BDD is a body-image disorder characterized by persistent and intrusive preoccupations with an imagined or slight defect in one's appearance
  • They can't control negative thoughts
  • As much as people tell them they look fine they don't believe them
  • People with this think about their flaws for hours each day

SYMPTOMS

  • Always looking in mirror
  • Asks for reassurance constantly that he/she looks good
  • Feels self conscious doesn't want to go out in public
  • Gets plastic surgery

DOCTOR DIAGNOSIS

  • If the person continuously talks about plastic surgery doctor will recommend patient to psychiatrist or psychologist
  • They will make diagnosis based on attitude, behavior, and symptoms

TREATMENTS

  • Medicines: serotonin which is an antidepressants, they decrease the obsessive and compulsive behaviors
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy - therapist help change the patients thoughts about themselves
