The truly first accredited case of DID/MPD is of Eberhardt Gmelin, but accounts state that a woman in 1614 was exhibiting similar characteristics.

RARITY

  • DID/MPD is pretty rare.
  • Fewer than 200,000 cases per year.
  • 1-3% of the world's population has DID/MPD.

OTHER TYPES

  • There are no other types of DID/MPD.

AGE GROUPS

  • Less likely to appear at 3-5 years old.
  • Mostly occurs 14+.

DIAGNOSIS

  • Two or more personalities are displayed.
  • Moments of memory loss.
  • Not caused by drugs, or use of alcohol.

TESTS

  • There are no known tests for DID/MPD, just repeated interviews.

While there are some family tendencies, DID/MPD is not inherited through genetics.

People who have Multiple Personalities are prone to extreme stress, and relationship problems.

PRIMARY CAUSE

  • Extreme trauma, especially from abuse in most cases.

SYMPTOMS

  • Anxiety
  • Feeling detached from self
  • Mood swings
  • Anesthesia
  • Blackouts

Most people result to impulsivity, self destructive behavior, and/or self harm.

TREATMENTS

  • Talk Therapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Psycho therapy
  • Hypnosis
  • EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing)

Sadly, there is no cure. Patients can only hope to gain control of their emotions over time.

There is no way to prevent DID/MPD.
