Distribution Of Sediments

No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

4 Types Of Sediments

BY: COLIN AND CHRIS

Terrigenous

  • Most abundant of sediment types •Originated on the continents or islands near them. •Transported to the sea by wind, rivers and glaciers •Most are derived of minerals from igneous rocks •Common components are quartz and clay

BIOGENOUS

  • Second most abundant •Composed of organically produced particles ➢Siliceous (silicon containing) such as Diatoms ➢Calcareous (calcium-carbonate containing) such as Foraminiferians •Originally brought to the ocean via rivers or deposits at oceanic ridge

HYDROGENOUS

  • Developed from chemical reactions involving minerals that have precipitated directly from seawater
  • Most abundant includes Manganese Nodules in some deep-sea beds and Phosphorite Nodules along the continental margin

COSMOGENOUS

  • Sediments from outer space •Least abundant of all
  • Occur in almost immeasurable amounts in sediment layer
  • Interplanatary dust, and Rare asteroids/comet impacts
