PRESENTATION OUTLINE

DISTRIBUTION OF SEDIMENTS:

WHAT SEDIMENTS LOOK LIKE

Sources of sediment: plate tectonics can cause sedimentation, so can erosion from weather, water, and biological processes like animals running around, or seashells from creatures getting dead.

Accumulation:
It varies by location due to water currents, geological processes and weather systems. Yay.

SEDIMENTS

BY PARTICLE SIZE

One way to classify sediments is by how well it is sorted. If they are all uniform in size within a particular sample, it is well sorted. If you have talcum powder mixed with sand and a boulder in the bunch, it's poorly sorted to unsorted.

GRAVEL, SAND, SILT AND CLAY

ALL REFER TO SEDIMENT SIZE AS WELL AS A GRAIN TYPE FOR SAND.

GRAIN SIZE EFFECTS DEPOSITION

BECAUSE IT TAKES MORE ENERGY TO MOVE BIGGER ROCKS.

SEDIMENT

BY SOURCE.

Today, waves and rivers and currents along with tides and storms all control sedimentation.

Relict sediment is all sediment that's really old. It could be volcanic or just old and gross.
