Diurnal, Nocturnal, and Crepuscular
What is it all about?

Diurnal

DIURNAL ANIMALS ARE ACTIVE DURING THE DAY AND INACTIVE AT NIGHT

Diurnality

  • What: describes an organism's behavior during the day
  • Where: takes place in living things
  • When: daytime
  • How: external patterns of environment, such as time of day, control activity
  • Whom: affects all organisms active during day

Why? Nocturnal and crepuscular animals are domesticated as household pets to coincide with humans.

What

are some of the animals that are diurnal?

Some diurnal animals are humans, birds, elephants, pets, squirrels, and many others

NOCTURNAL

NOCTURNAL organisms are active at night and inactive in the day

Nocturnality

  • What: describes plant and animal behavior in the night
  • Where: takes place in living things
  • When: during the night
  • How: niche differentiation, where a species' niche is separated by amount of time
  • Whom: affects all living things active in the night

Why?
Many ancestors of modern day mammals evolved nocturnal characteristics to avoid contact with numerous diurnal predators.

What

are some nocturnal animals?

Some nocturnal animals are:
Raccoons
Rodents
Wild cats
Owls
Bears
and Bats

Crepuscular

CREPUSCULAR animals are those that are active during twilight

CREPUSCULARITY

  • What: describes plant and animal behavior during twilight
  • Where: takes place in living things
  • When: during twilight
  • How: daylight cycle patterns, control activity
  • Whom: affects all living things active at twilight

Why? Crepuscular animals forage at twilight, when there are less predators and more prey.

What

are some crepuscular animals?

Some crepuscular animals are:
ocelots, hyenas, flying squirrels, nighthawk, and bobcats.

Questions?

Why does this all matter?
Without diurnality, nocturnality, and crepuscularity, all organisms would have the same cycle, which would cause chaos and possibly a lack of prey for certain animals. Food chains and food webs would be unbalanced, eventually leading to extinction.
