One day of every year, sixteen year olds have to take an aptitude test that will tell them which faction they are suited for. "Tomorrow at the choosing ceremony, I will decide on a faction; I will decide to stay with my family or abandon them." (Roth 2)

Instead of fitting in to one faction, she shows aptitude results for three: Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless. This makes her "Divergent" and she is warned not to share this information with anyone.

She surprises herself and everyone by choosing Dauntless. Beatrice, who renames herself Tris when she reaches Dauntless Headquarters, is introduced to the instructor, Four. He explains that the transfers must pass initiation before they are accepted as full-fledged Dauntless members.

Stage two puts the initiates into a simulation in which they will encounter various fears. Because Tris is Divergent, she is able to recognize that she is under a simulation while the others do not, and is able to manipulate it. At the end of the second stage, Tris ranks first among the initiates.

After monitoring her results, Four realizes Tris is Divergent. The final stage is the fear landscape. All of their fears will be in a single simulation.

Tris' relationship with Four continues to grow and he lets her in his fear landscape. She learns he only has four fears,hence the name, and also finds out that his real name is Tobias.

The final rankings are posted and Tris ranks first. While celebrating, she finds out that the serum is how the Erudite will force Dauntless to carry out the attack. The plan is carried out that night. The serum creates a simulation on all the Dauntless, but does not work on Tris or Tobias because they are Divergent. That doesn't benefit them much as they watch Abnegation become destroyed.

They try to escape but are caught by Jeanine, the Erudite leader, who injects Tobias with a new serum that affects the Divergent.

Tris is sentenced to death and is trapped in a tank to drown but she is saved by her mother who was a former Dauntless member. As they escape, Tris' mother is shot and killed, leaving only Tris to shut down the simulation.
