PRESENTATION OUTLINE
The principles of the doctrines of Christ
- So we continue our studies of these principles
- We will examine baptism - plural baptisms
- Primarily focused on the 3rd step of salvation
- Also examine other baptisms the Bible talks of
- We must establish the truth of water baptism
Baptisms in the Scripture
- Several baptisms mentioned
- We'll briefly discuss each
- Our emphasis will be water baptism
Baptism unto Moses in the cloud
- 1 Corinthians 10:1-2
- Two aspects of their escape from bondage
- "under the cloud, and all passed through the sea"
- This "type" shows baptism of water and the Spirit John 3:5
- Israel, "the church in the wilderness"(Acts 7:38) a type to us
Baptism of John
- Each gospel talks of John the Baptist
- Baptism to repentance for remission of sins
- A forerunner of Jesus
- Was given a revelation
- The Spirit descended like a dove - John 1:33
Baptism for the Dead
- 1 Corinthians 15:29 - whole chapter
- This chapter covers the resurrection from the dead
- Some said it had already passed - 2 Timothy 2:18
- Along with this they were baptizing for the dead
- Paul hit these ideas in 1 Corinthians 15:29
Baptism for the Dead
- The Mormons practice this
- Marcion and his followers did it in 2nd century
- Marcion was used to spread much false doctrine
- So we can see the Mormons didn't invent it
- Paul dealt with it and it isn't supported in scripture
Baptism of Suffering
- Matthew 20:22-23; Mark 10:38-39; Luke 12:50
- Jesus referred to the cup and the baptism
- It was a metaphor for the suffering He must undergo
- Our sin made that cup so bitter and the baptism difficult
- For Jesus this begin at Gethsemane and ended at Calvary
Baptism of the Holy Ghost
- This is what Hebrews 6:2 was referring to
- Water baptism
- And the baptism of the Holy Ghost
- These are necessary according to Jesus(John 3:1-8)
- We're going to cover this briefly
Baptism of the Holy Ghost
- Receiving the Holy Ghost, immersed in the Spirit
- Scripture calls it baptism/birth of the Spirit
- Matt 3:11; John 1:33; Acts 11:16; 1 Cor 12:13
- John 3:1-8 - Jesus made it plan it takes both
- Baptism of the water and of the Spirit
Baptism for remission of sins
- Jesus - Luke 24:47
- Both repentance and remission of sins
- Preached on the Day of Pentecost
- Acts 2:38
- Peter, the man with the keys
Baptism Washes away our Sins
- "Wash away thy sins" - Acts 22:16
- "but ye are washed" - 1 Corinthians 6:11
- Birth of the water - John 3:5
Baptism
- Cleanses our Conscience
- "answer of a good conscience" - 1 Peter 3:21
- "purge your conscience" - Hebrews 9:14
- Is Burial - Romans 6:3-4 "buried with Him"
- "Buried with him" Colossians 2:12
We take on the name of Jesus
- "put on Christ" - Galatians 3:27
- "put ye on the Lord Jesus" - Romans 13:14
- "the worthy name" - James 2:7
- "nameth the name of Christ" - 2 Tim 2:19
What name should be called
- "in the name of Jesus" - Acts 2:38
- "the name of the Lord Jesus" - Acts 19:4-5
- "the name" - Matthew 28:19
- "baptized into Jesus Christ" - Romans 6:3
- Jesus told his disciples - Luke 24:47
What name should be called
- It was fulfilled in Acts 2:38
- 3,000 were baptized the way Peter preached
- Philip baptized the same way - Acts 8:12-16
- Peter told Cornelius to do the same - Acts 10:44-48
- Paul instructed others the same formula - Acts 19:1-7
The early church taught
- That Jesus was Lord and Christ - Acts 2:36
- Salvation in none other - Acts 4:12
- That Jesus has all power - Matthew 28:18
- The name must be "Jesus"
Why do so many baptize in the titles Father, Son and Holy Ghost?
As the church grew older
- False teachers arose
- Sincere people misunderstood
- Many erroneous ideas developed
- Reached apex at Council of Nicaea 325 AD
- Adopted teaching of Athanasius(Early trinitarianism)
Council of Nicaea
- An early official step in triun direction
- After this Catholicism came into prominence
- Dominated western Christendom for 1200 years
- 1517AD Martin Luther began Protestant Reformation
- Those who separated still held the trinity and spread it
The Bible and history show that all New Testament believers were baptized in Jesus name.
Historian Robert M. Grant, professor of NT and early Christianity at University of Chicago; "At first, baptisms took place in the name of the Lord Jesus, later in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit."
Robert M. Grant; "Christian baptism as we meet it in Paul, in the book of Acts, is in the name of Jesus"
Robert M. Grant; "To be baptized in or into the name of Jesus means turning away from other names."
Robert M. Grant; "Do the baptismal formulas and creeds set forth a doctrine of the Trinity? Those we have thus far described do not."(in reference to previous statements)
How important is water baptism?
- From scripture no baptism = no remission
- Refuse baptism = refuse the blood of Jesus
- "believeth and is baptized" - Mark 16:16
- "Baptism doth also now save us" - 1 Peter 3:21
- It is vital and important to salvation
