DODGE CITY, KANSAS

BEGINNINGS

  • Started out as Fort Mann, it would later come to be known as Dodge City in 1847.

FAMOUS FOR

  • Dodge City was famous for being a wild frontier town of the Old West.

POPULATION

  • 996 in 1880
  • 1763 in 1890
  • 25,245 in 2000
  • 27,453 in 2016

BULL FIGHTING

  • Dodge City had its own bullfighting ring where Mexican bullfighters would put on a show with specially chosen Texas Longhorns.

HOW IT GOT INVOLVED IN THE CATTLE TRADE

  • The arrival of the railroad soon made Dodge City involved with the railroad.

“QUEEN OF THE COW TOWNS”

  • Dodge City became “queen of the cow towns” after the quarantine line was pushed westward after a tick that carried Texas Cattle Fever was found in Kansas.

NEW ROUTE TO DODGE CITY

  • A new route known as the Great Western Cattle Trail or Western Trail branched off from the Chisholm Trail to lead cattle into Dodge City. This made it a boomtown, having thousands of cattle pass through its stockyards annually.
  • Peak years were 1883 and 1884.
