LOCATION AND SIZE

  • The Dominican Republic is located south of Mexico in the Caribbean.
  • It borders the country Haiti
  • Part of the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.
  • It's population is about double Minnesota (10,478,756) However it's area is a lot smaller. (18,792 square miles)

HISTORY

  • The capitol Santo Domingo which was founded in 1496, is the oldest European city in the new world.
  • Declared it's independence from Haiti in 1844, but was ruled by the U.S. from 1918-1924 because of the lack of a constitutional government.

PEOPLE AND LIFESTYLE

  • The population of the Dominican Republic is 10,478,756.
  • It is the most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean.
  • Every year from January through March, tourists can see 3-5 thousand whales that have made the trip down for migration.

CULTURE

  • Personal appearance is very important to them, so they are always up to date with the newest fashion trends.
  • Women great each other with a kiss, and great men with a handshake if they are unfamiliar.
  • When someone dies, they hold a vela, or candlelight watch to mourn.
  • Dominican Republic loves baseball and some very famous MLB baseball players have come from there.

  • Their currency is a Dominican peso.
  • Have a representative democracy government system and elect a president to a 4 year term.
  • Divided into 31 provinces.
