Donnie Darko is a normal teenager that everyone thinks is Schizophrenic because he sees a strange person in a bunny suit named Frank that tells him the world is going to end and that he is the only one who can save it. The night he meets Frank a plane engine falls through his room, Frank saved him. He starts going out with a girl and tells her about the stuff that is going on and about time travel. Come Halloween and his girlfriend, Gretchen, is hit by a car and he shoots the man who ran her over, Frank. He then goes back in time to stay in his room while the engine falls, killing him, which fixes everything and makes everything bad that happened, not happen.
Ordinary World : This is in the first 10 minutes of the movie when it introduces all of the cast and shows everyone's daily lives. Call To Adventure : This is later when Frank calls him to a golf course and explains to him about time travel. The Road Back : This is after Gretchin dies and carries her body back to his house. The Ressurection : This is when Donnie time travels to redeem himself. Return with Elixir : This is when Donnie stays in his room and sacrifices himself so everyone else stays alive.
Hero : Donnie Darko the protagonist that will save the universe. The Mentor/Devil Figure : Frank the person who tells Donnie about time travel and guides him towards saving universe and destroying it at the same time. The Scapegoat : Jim Cunningham the man who everything that Donnie does thats bad affects. The Apparently Evil figure with a good heart : Doctor Thurman Donnie's therapist who seems to want to make him seem psycho but encourages him to be himself.
The Quest : To save the Primary Universe and life as we know it. The Task : Donnie must learn how to sucessfully time travel and prevent the Tangent Universe. The Initiation : When Frank calls Donnie to the golf course and tells him about the end of the world. The Wound : When Gretchin dies and Donnie kills Frank. Motif : The complexities of Time-Travel

Theme : There is no single answer to any question. Every person's explanation differs according to how they were brought up, where they were brought up, who brought them up. This seems like a very simple answer to a perplexingly complex movie, but when you think about it, it gets to the very crux of what we all seem to take for granted: our own minds, how they differ, and that we are all entitled to our own interpretation.
The ideas in 1-3 reveal to a very extended depth, the nature and purpose of the character through his journey in the film. They make it easier to understand the plot, and the meaning behind any literary devices in Donnie Darko and other films.
