For 17 years, the law prohibited qualified gay and lesbian Americans from serving in the armed forces and sent a message that discrimination was acceptable.
DADT Repeal-
The president signed this legislation on December 22,2010 but DADT was not repealed until September 20 2011, after the president informed congress that the department of defense had prepared the necessary policies and regulations to implement repeal and those policies and regulations were consistent with military standards for readiness, effectiveness, unit cohesion, and recruiting and retention.
New Beginning-
That day was the beginning of a new chapter for the nations military. Gay and lesbian serves members previously discharged under DADT now have the opportunity to re-enlist.

Today, americans in uniforms will not have to lie about who they are in order to serve their country for no longer. The armed forces will not lose extra ordinary skills and combat experiences of gay and lesbian service members.
How did Congress pass DADT?
In the constitution it says that congress has the authority for making the rules a regulations for military services. January 27, 2010 Obama worked with Congress on repealing the law that denies homosexual Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are.
Pros of the DADT-
The men and women serving our country no longer have to live a lie. Competence and character are what matter most to the military academies not their sexuality.
Cons of DADT-
It lowered the standards of the military to allow homosexuals into the military, also increased the numbers of male and female sexual assault and sexual harassment cases in the military. It also denies a portion if our citizenry the same rights and responsibilities the rest of us enjoy.
