"Surely he took up our pain, and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed." - Isaiah 53:4-5 NIV

He went away from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, ‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done.’
Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, ‘Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake for one hour? Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.’
He came a third time and said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough of that! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us go. Look! My betrayer is approaching!’
Day after day I sat teaching in the temple courts, yet you did not arrest me. But this has happened so that the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled.’
Jesus had a Holy Habit. He prayed every day. When He went down to the Garden of Gethsemane, His disciples thought, "Oh, Jesus is just going to the garden to pray again, just like he went yesterday, and the day before that and the day before that and the day before that." But it wasn't just another day. Jesus needed strength because He was going to take our sins to the cross, and become the sacrifice to pay for our sins. He needed strength. Jesus was God, but He was also human. Humans get tired. Humans get scared. Humans need to pray. Even though Jesus was God, he had a human body, and He needed to pray.
Jesus asked His disciples to pray with Him. If there is something hard in your life, ask somebody to pray with you about it. Maybe you can ask your Mom or Dad or friend, or grandpa, or pastor. When things are hard, who would you ask to pray with you?
Step three when you've got to do hard things is: PRAY MORE! Jesus went back a second time and prayed again. He prayed so hard that his sweat was like drops of blood. This is called hematohidrosis. Can you say that? Me neither. It's pretty rare, but it happens when a person is under a lot of pressure.
During World War II, it happened to the soldiers. This was the situation: the good guys were the Allies were America, England, Russia, Canada, Australia, and France, and they needed to get a victory over the bad guys: the Axis. The bad guys were taking over whole countries and hurting God's people: the Jews, so it was time to stop them! But it was going to be a hard, hard job. It would be the hardest thing these soldiers had ever done. Everything was at stake: they were trying to save the world. The soldiers said that when they were in their little landing boats heading toward the beach, rocking back and forth in the waves and hearing the battle in front of them, that they looked down at their hands, and they were all red because they were sweating blood; they were so scared. But they went to the battle anyway to rescue the countries that were taken over! That was brave!
Jesus was so stressed that his sweat became bloody too. Jesus had a battle in front of him, too. Everything was at stake; he was going to save the world. He knew that He had to be the sacrifice to pay for our sins. He was the Lamb of God that would take away the sin of the world. It was going to be very hard to die on the cross, but Jesus went anyway. That was brave.
Being brave doesn't mean that you don't feel scared. It means that you feel scared, and you do your job anyway.
Being brave doesn't mean that you don't feel scared. It means that you feel scared, and you do your job anyway. Don't think that you are better than Jesus. Jesus was scared, too. Jesus was God, but He was also human, and humans get scared sometimes. But when you pray, you can get strength to do hard things.
"Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." - Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of England said that World War II had taught him this lesson: "never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never . . ."
