Doris 'Dorie' Miller lived a short life and was recognized by many blacks, being heavily publicized by the black press. He was born October 12, 1919, unfortunately dying November 24, 1943.😪
Doris was born on a cotton farm to Connery and Henrietta Miller. He was the second- youngest in four sons usually cooking meals or doing the laundry and sometimes even working on his father's farm.
He was in many wars, WWII (World War 2), The Attack on Pearl Harbour, Operation Galvanic, The Battle of Tarawa, The Battle of Makin (his last war) and some others.
He won many awards (most of them being honour medals) such as the Purple Heart, The Combat Action Ribbon, The American Defence Medal, The Navy Cross and several others.
A story was released by the Pittsburgh Courier. It gave his name as 'Dorie Miller'. Some writers suggested it as a name his fellow shipmates, family and friends would call him.
