WHAT DOWN SYNDROME IS

  • A genetic chromosome 21 disorder causing developmental and intellectual delays
  • Also called trisomy 21

CAUSES OF DOWN SYNDROME

  • Research shows that three types of chromosomal changes can lead to Down syndrome
  • Trisomy 21-child has three copies of chromome 21 in all cells
  • Mosiac down syndrome-children have some cells with an extra copy of chromosome 21
  • Translocation down syndrome-when part of chromosome 21 becomes attatched to another chromosome

there are no signs that a child will have Down syndrome during pregnancy. At birth, babies with Down syndrome usually have certain characteristic signs, including:

  • Flat facial features
  • Small head and ears
  • Short neck
  • Bulging tongue
  • Eyes slanted upward

DETECTION

  • Diagnostic tests include:
  • Percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS).
  • Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)
  • Amniocentesis

TREATMENT

  • there is no cure for down syndrome
  • Speech therapy can help the child speak better
  • Physical therapy helps develop motor skills
