DOWN SYMDROME

DEFINITION

  • Down syndrome is a genetic condition
  • That affects chromosome 21.

SYMPTOMS

  • Short and weak
  • Heart defects
  • Slow learning
  • Poor judgement
  • Cognitive disability

PHYSICAL CAUSE

  • Increases with the age of the mother
  • Although younger woman due to higher fertility rate
  • 80% of children with Down syndrome are born with
  • A mother under 35 years of age.

šŸ„TREATMENT/CUREšŸ„

  • There is no treatment or cure
  • For Down syndrome, but you may
  • Need surgery at birth.

GENETIC CAUSE

  • Trisomy 21-when you have 3 copies of chromosome 21.
  • Mosaic Down syndrome-when abnormal cell Division after fertilization.
  • Translocation Down syndrome when chromosome 21 attaches to another
  • Chromosome.

CHANCE OF HAPPENING AGAIN

  • If the father is a carrier the
  • Chance is 3%.
  • If a mother is a carrier the chance
  • Is 10-15%.
  • At 40 years it is 1 in 10

RECOMMENDATION TO PARENTS

  • If you have a child with
  • This disorder the chance of
  • Having another child with
  • Down syndrome is 1%.
