DOWN SYNDROME

  • Is the most common chromosomal disorder
  • Occurs when a person has a full or partial extra copy of
  • of chromosome 21.

errors in cell division that cause Down syndrome

  • disjunction:developing egg or sperm divides incorrectly
  • 95% of cases are caused by disjunction
  • translocation:happens before fertilization 4%
  • mosaicism:occurs after cell division. About 1%

Signs and Symptoms

  • Common physical traits:
  • Small stature,upward slant to the eyes,hypotonia,
  • Flat hypoplastic face,transverse palmers crease,protruding
  • Tounge.mental retardation can range in severity.
  • Some may have a few traits and others may have none.

TREATMENT

  • There is no cure for Down syndrome or specific
  • Treatment
  • There are only treatments for the conditions and
  • defects caused by Down syndrome .

  • Even though many individuals with Down syndrome
  • Have mental and physical limitations they can live
  • a productive and healthy life.
