BACKGROUND

  • Ph.D. in physical anthropology
  • Worked the Institute of Hereditary Biology and Racial Hygiene
  • Apprentince to Otmar von Verschuer
  • Joined Nazi Party in 1937
  • Drafted into SS in 1940 ("Josef")

BACKGROUND (CONT.)

  • Wounded during battle
  • Began to work at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute
  • Promoted to captain
  • Transfered to Auschwitz ("Josef")

EVENT: EXPERIMENTS

  • Fascinated with twins and dwarfs (Jewish and Roma children)
  • Operations preformed without anesthesia
  • Physical and psycological experiments
  • Removal of organs & limbs, blood transfusions & sex change operations
  • Once tried to sew two Gypsy twins together ("Josef Mengele, Angel")

EVENT: GOALS OF THE EXPERIMENTS

  • Find better ways to sterilize inferiors
  • Change dark eyes into blue
  • Improved medical treatments for German army
  • Try to improve fertilify of German women
  • (Eglash and Bachrach)

EVENT: MENGELE'S ROLL AT AUSCHWITZ

  • Not head physician at Auschwitz
  • Head physician was Dr. Eduard Wirths
  • Most people associate him with the selection of prisoners
  • Did not preform this task more than any of his other colleagues ("Josef")
  • "Angel of Death"

IMPACT: MODERN MEDICINE

IMPACT: THE ETHNIC DILEMA

  • Debate over ethinc validity of Nazi experiments
  • Ethically sound=scientifically valid
  • Dr. Kratz from Yale believes the experiments should be released for public view
  • Could suggest that experiments could be of use & doctors are highly trained
  • This might change people's view of the medical officials (Cohen)
