DRED AND HARRIET SCOTT

IMPORTANT COUPLE LEADING UP TO THE CIVIL WAR

Dred and Harriet Scott were both slaves when they met and married at Fort Snelling in 1836.

They were later brought from Minnesota to Missouri in the 1840s.

In 1846 the Scott's sued for freedom. They claimed they had lived in a free territory, so they were free.

In 1857 the Supreme Court ruled against the Scotts and refused to give them their freedom.

This case was an important factor to the coming Civil War.

Many Southerners thought this now meant that their right to hold slaves was protected forever. . Northerners feared slavery would spread if they didn't do something about it.
