What is a drought anyways?

A drought is when precipitation over time in an area is below average, often causing ecological or economic problems.

WHY DO DROUGHTS HAPPEN?

  • Dry season
  • Wind patterns preventing precipitation
  • Climate change
  • El Niño or La Niña

  • Little percipitation
  • Shortage of food
  • Shortage of water
  • Less humidity

Droughts are unpredictable in the long term, and they can happen anywhere, even here in Minnesota! Take a look!

How do droughts affect people who don't even live in the area?

Imagine being a farmer who grows food. When the rain can no longer keep your plants growing, they will obviously die or stop growing as well. If you used to sell your crops in the next town and no longer can, it may cause a food shortage.
