PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Sinterklaas is St Nicholas, the patron saint of children, sailors and many others as well. Every year, about three weeks before December 5, Sinterklaas and his helpers arrive in the Netherlands from Spain by steamboat. The arrival is shown live on television; the highlights are shown on the news. For the next three weeks Sinterklaas and his Zwarte Piet helpers tour the Netherlands visiting children .
King’s Day is the biggest national event in Holland. Everything and everyone turns orange and celebrates on King’s Day. You will find music shows, fairs, flea markets and parties throughout the country.
In Holland and especially the provinces Limburg and Noord-Brabant are the predominantly Catholic provinces of the Netherlands, where most inhabitants celebrate Carnival. Though some people take the Carnival traditions very seriously, most people keep it simple and just drink, sing and dance wearing a colourful outfit.
5 rules for dealing with Dutch birthday’s
1. Sitting in a big circle of chairs, drinking coffee and eating a piece of cake.
2. If it is your birthday at work, you are expected to take in cake for your entire department.
3. If it is your partner or child’s birthday, you must congratulate everyone else in the family.
4. If it is your child’s birthday and they are at a Dutch primary school, you will be expected to supply a ‘traktatie’ – an edible gift for every child in the class.
5. If you are turning 50, beware of Abraham or Sarah.
Calling raw herring Dutch sushi won’t fool anyone. You cannot get more Dutch than eating one – especially when the Hollandse Nieuwe hit the shops. The start of the new herring season is always a major media circus.

Wearing overalls is a very big tradition among students in Finland. They represent you and your fellow students as a collective, especially since every study field has its own overall color and/or design. Overalls come in all colours. Blue, black, white, yellow, green, red, pink... You can tell who belongs to your group just by checking out the overalls colour.
