What is E. coli?
E. coli are bacteria that normally live in the intestines of humans and animals. Some of the bacteria is harmless, but several are known to produce toxins that can cause diarrhea, and others can cause serious kidney damage.

WHO GETS E. COLI 0157:H7 INFECTION?

  • Anyone of age can become infected with E. coli 0157:H7
  • Children and the elderly are more likely to develop serious complications.

SYMPTOMS

  • The bacteria live in the intestines of cattle and can occur that the meat becomes contaminated
  • Infection can also occur after consuming foods like lettuce, salami, juice or cider.
  • Or if you don't wash your hands after using the restroom

Most people recover without specific treatment in five to ten days. Antibiotics should not be used for the treatment of E. coli. Studies show that some of the antibiotics may crease the risk of complications.

PREVENTIONS

  • Don't eat uncooked hamburger or ground beef products
  • Wash fruits and veggies thoroughly, especially those that will not be cooked
  • Make sure infected people wash their hands
