Mesoamerica

This region includes lands stretching from the Valley of Mexico to Costa Rica in Central America. The region’s geography was ideal for farming. The first crops grown in the Americas included pumpkins, peppers, squash, gourds, and beans. The people of this land were the Olmecs.

Teotihuacán

Also known as “Place of the Gods.” The people of this city were the Mayans. These people lived in the steamy rain forests of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Cuzco

They lived North of Mesoamerica and eventually learned there way of farming. There surroundings were in high river valleys, often above 10,000 feet (3,048 m). There people were called the Inca.

Cahokia

The largest city in southwestern Illinois. Their mounds were pyramid shaped but with flat tops. They had over 30,000
