Linear A

  • Devised by palace official of the Minoan society.
  • Written symbols stood for syllables instead of letters or words.
  • Used to keep records of economic and commercial matters.

Linear B

  • Devised by the Mycenaeans when they adapted Linear A to their own language (which was an early form of Greek).
  • Also a syllabic script.

Loss Of The Scripts

  • 1100-800 B.C.E. - The Mycenaean society falls due to invasions and civil disturbances.
  • Writing in both Linear A and Linear B disappeared during this time.
