A Timeline

  • Thirteen thousand or more years ago-the first Texans found their way to Texas
  • Thirteen thousand or more years ago-the Paleolithic era
  • 6000 B.C-A.D. 700-the Archaic era
  • BC 700- AD 1500-the late prehistoric period

The First Texans arrive/The Paleolithic Era

  • The first Texans were mostly hunters and gatheres
  • They shared their land with the Ice Age animals like mammoths, dire wolves, giant sloths and cave lions

The Archaic Era

  • It was drier at the start of the Archaic Era so; the Ice Age mammals became extinct
  • Most of the people in the Archaic time lived in what is now called the Panhandle Plains

The Late Prehistoric Period

  • This period begins with cultural diversity spreading across the state
  • On the coast is a tribe called the Karankawa
  • Another tribe is called the Akokisa
  • Another is the Caddo

The Karankawa Tribe

  • The Karankawa tribe was a very outdoor loving tribe
  • They were very competitive, they loved to run and swim, but most of all wrestle
  • They used to eat mostly alligators, large turtles, rabbits and deer

The Akokisa

  • The Akokisa lived in houses made to keep them cool because they lived in such a warm climate
  • the Akokisa tribe made their houses in the shape of a beehive and their hearth was always in the middle of the house

The Caddo

  • The Caddo tribe are mostly credited for giving Texas its name (see next slide)
  • The Caddos made BEAUTIFUL pottery
  • They spoke Caddo and English

The Story of Texas's Name

  • The Caddo were out hunting once and saw some Spaniards, they greeted them with "Te-yas," meaning friends which is also Texas's motto!!

The Early land and its people Era was important because of the influence the Native American tribes left behind these became the base of the many cultures of Texas.
