EARLY SETTLERS IN sAMOA

hISTORY

  • Evidence suggests that Samoa, Fiji and Tonga may be the original homelands of the Polynesians.
  • Archaeologists place the earliest human settlement of the Samoan archipelago at around 1500 B.C.
  • Two maidens from Fiji who brought the art of tatau, or tattoo
  • According to legend, Samoa shares the common Polynesian ancestor of Tagaloa
  • According to many legends, Samoa was Tagaloa's first creation. 

architecture

  • The traditional Samoan living quarters are called Fale
  • The fale tele (big house), is the most important house
  • The fale is lashed and tied together with a plaited sennit rope called ʻafa
  • Coconut husk of nut used to make afa rope
  • Traditionally, the afolau served as the dwelling house or guest house

Food

  • Traditional Samoan Food is cooked in an Umu
  • Coconut appears in many Samoan dishes,
  • a parcel of coconut cream wrapped in taro leaves baked in the umu.
  • The umu contains an abundance and variety of dishes
  • the older members of the family will sit and eat first then the young

Weapons

  • 1) Povai - A long slender war club with a domed end.
  • 2) Fa'aau*fala - A short mace like war club covered in numerous spikes.
  • 3) Uatogi - A war club made in the shape of a coconut stalk or midrib.
  • 4) Talavalu - A war club with 8 spikes 4 on both sides.
  • 5) Fa'alau*fa'i - A tooth war club made in the shape of a banana leaf.

entertainment

  • Samoans ofteh use dance as a source of entertainment
  • The sasa is a group dance performed sitting to a drum rhythm.
  • The traditional Samoan dance is the siva.
  • It is often performed at weddings, birthdays and other Samoan celebrations.
  • a traditional Samoan War Dance was preformed with sticks and spears

Clothing

  • The traditional ladies clothing is the puletasi
  • The lava-lava is a sarong which may be worn by men or women.
  • They are of different patterns and colors
  • Plain for men who may wear it as part of an official uniform. 
  • Men are usually are tattooed onto their lower body and upper legs.
