- There were many reasons behind this HUGE decision (Annexation)
Sam Houston
Sam Houston was the first president of Texas Republic. He convinced Texans that joining the US would offer them protection from Mexico and be good as new trade partners.
Pros to Statehood
- Manifest Destiny: the belief that Americans Destiny was to Conquer the Continent
- Cotton trade: TX was rich in farmland and livestock which would be beneficial for the US
- Many Americans lived in TX already
- Slave trade (Favored by the North)
Cons:
1. Worried about war with Mexico
2. The US. would have to take over Texas debt
3.Slavery expansion(in the North)
4. Native Americans lived in Texas and were hostile
James Polk
In 1844 James Polk the 11th president of the United states decided the pros beat the cons.
Texas Becomes the 28th State
- TX forms a new state government
- TX creates it's own new Constitution
- Still allows slavery but does not allow women or blacks to vote
- Gets it's own state governor James P Henderson
Mexican/ American War 1846-1848
- As expected Mexico was not happy
- US had to go to war with Mexico to finally get it to leave Texas alone
- US WON! Mexico had to recognize TX as a part of the US
- Mexico had to sign the Treaty of Guadulupe.
Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo
- Made the Rio Grande the Southern border of Texas. These are the states TX owned (Wyoming, Nevada, and Colorado!)
- Allowed the US. to take a huge amount of land including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, and Colorado!
- Manifest Destiny was becoming a reality
Compromise of 1850
- Helped calm some of the concerns that TX statehood brought with it:
- Allowed California to join the US as a non-slave state
- Agreed that slaves who escaped would be returned to their owners
- TX agreed to give up some of it's disputed territory
Compromise was still not enough
- Texas wanted slaves to continue to serve because they were very important to its economy
- When Abe Lincoln was elected the disagreement became more severe
- TX joined other slave states and seceeded from the Union
- Civil War begins
Summary Statement
- TX Statehood Era was very important to how the US looks now.
- Established boundaries for the country and states.
