THE SUN

  • THE SUN IS A STAR THAT THE EARTH ORBITS AROUND
  • Orbit: the path an object follows as it moves around another object
  • The sun is the center of the solar system
  • All heat and light coming from the sun, comes from fusion in the suns core
  • Every second, 600 million tons of hydrogen are being converted into helium

What causes the Sun's apparent motion across the sky?

The Sun appears to move around because the Earth revolves around the Sun
Earths revolution around the Sun takes 365.24 days
A revolution is the motion of one object around another object
It takes every planet a different amount of time to revolve around the Sun
For example Venus' year 225 days but Jupiters year is 12 years on Earth

Why is the Earth warmer at the equator and colder at the poles?

The sunlight that reaches the Earth's surface the warmer that part becomes.
Earths surface becomes more tilted as you move away from the equator
Sunlight stretches further away from the equator but sunlight is less spread out near the equator
