OCEAN ACIDIFICATION

EARTH SCIENCE

It's not only fossil fuels, coal, oil and natural gases that are increasing global warming, ocean acidification is also a big problem now. Every day the sea absorbs about a third of the CO2 in the air. This is making our ocean more acidic which then kills the animals and creatures in the sea and on our plates.

Carbon dioxide lowers the pH of the oceans, causing them to become more corrosive and acidic. As the surface of the seawater absorbs the CO2, it forms carbonic acid, which is what we find in Soda's. Then this breaks down into hydrogen ions. Seawater itself has a pH of 8 but this chemical is causing it's pH to become more acidic.

The oceanographers measure different densities in the open ocean by using the units of kilograms per cubic meters. Fresh water weighs about 1000 kilograms per cubic meter and seawater weighs about 1.026 times that.

Why are oceans filled with salt water instead of fresh? This is because over millions of years, rain, streams and rivers have been washed over rocks containing sodium chloride and then carried into the sea.

The surface of the ocean contains less gasses since it is warmer - deep water contains more gases since it's colder. Seawater with a low salinity holds more gas than high salinity water.

VARIATION IN TEMPERATURE

The temperature of the oceans depend on the climate in the air. During the Summer, the ocean can be warm due to the sunlight shining directly on it. This is also when the deep water receives some sunlight.
During the winter, the sun isn't as strong so the water will be colder throughout the ocean layers, although the bottom will always be colder.

When water warms up, it expands because heat energy makes the molecules move around faster and take up more space. The density goes down because the molecules are more spread out but when the water cools, it becomes denser again.

The upper layer of the ocean is warmer as it is warmed by the sun. Below that layer is called the thermocline which is colder, makes up 80% of the ocean. It doesn't have much access to sunlight.

Nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide are the 3 main gases dissolved in the sea. It keeps a balance between the ocean and the atmosphere by exchanging these gases. Wind and waves help this happen.

Seas water has different gases- nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The ocean tends to warm slower than the Earth and this does harm some of our living organisms such as coral. When the temperature changes, it's proven that coral bleaches which actually slows down the process of it's growth.

Cold water is denser so it tends to sink. It hold more dissolvable water such as carbon dioxide.

Other organisms are also affected. This includes krill, one of the most important organisms in the food chain. So temperature does affect the food chain a lot since the number of krill is getting smaller, most animals don't have food which is causing their number to decrease as well.

Krill produce small numbers when temperature rises. They like the cold.

QUIZ!

  • What is the pH of the ocean?
  • What is the coldest/densest part of the ocean?
  • Can you think of some ways which we can try to reduce Ocean acidification.
People rely on oceans food transportation, oxygen, climate, ocean's power to creat life is rivalled by our own power to destroy it. Carbon dioxide enters the sea which cause the ocean to get more acidic which will kill the animals, sea will change pH. plants need c02 it to grow, burning fossil fuels. Release c02. When c02 mixes with ocean water, it becomes an acid. Ocean acidity is increasing each day, if we continue to pollute, the sea will continue to be harmed. Thousand of ocean species build shells to survive. Shells will dissolve, organisms are dying. Acidic sea water can dissolve sea shells. In just a few decades, we will kill the sea. Fish are a basic food source for people and animals.
