  • Japans surface has tectonic plates that move many inches per year
  • the movement can cause great distortions that results in earthquakes
  • Pacific and Philippine techtonic plates lye under Japan

What does Japan do to prepare for Earthquakes?

  • constructing buildings which are often swinging in their foundation
  • so that they are able to buffer from much of the earthquake shaking.
  • Every schoolchild in Japan is familiar with earthquake drills

How has the technology/preparation improved?

  • Japans Meteorological Agency forecasts warnings for the public 
  • they automatically analyze and predicts the rough area of  the epicenter 
  • back then they didn't have the technology to do this
