THE CRUST (LITHOSPHERE)

  • Much thinner than the other parts of the Earth
  • Continental crust and oceanic crust
  • Continental crust mostly granite rock
  • Oceanic crust is made of basalt (rocks from volcanoes)

CRUST

MANTLE (ASTHENOSPHERE)

  • Largest layer of the Earth
  • 1800 miles thick
  • Made of hot, dense rock
  • Temperature can go from
  • 1600 degrees F near the top and 4000 degrees near bottom

MANTLE

OUTER CORE

  • Very hot
  • The metals it is made of are liquid
  • Made of iron and Nickel

OUTER CORE

INNER CORE

  • Hottest part of the Earth
  • Beneath the crust 4000 miles
  • About 800 miles thick
  • Temperatures can reach 9000 degrees F.

INNER CORE

OCEANIC CRUST

  • Denser than continental crust
  • Not as thick as continental crust

OCEANIC CRUST

CONTINENTAL CRUST

  • Thicker, but "fluffy"
  • Sits higher than oceanic crust
  • Not as dense as oceanic crust

CONTINENTAL CRUST
