In the Estonian folk calendar Easter is celebrated not only as a great church holiday but also as a spring holiday to welcome the arrival of the lighter and warmer season.

And although chocolate eggs and bright-coloured feathers have found their way into Estonian family traditions, many of the old customs are being kept alive, too.

Easter traditions

Easter in Russia is one of the most important Russian holidays. The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Easter according to the Orthodox calendar, and it can occur in April or May.

The Russian Easter egg tradition dates back to pre-Christian times when people saw eggs as fertility symbols and as devices of protection.

Christian Easter feast lasts seven days and is called the Holy Week or Sedmitsa.

Russians celebrate Easter with an Easter meal. Russian Easter foods include kulich (Russian Easter bread), paskha (a dish made from cheese and other ingredients, eggs, and other foods.
