989 A.D. KIEV BECOMES ORTHODOX

  • Created ties with the Byzantines.
  • Influenced Russia's religion today.

1054 A.D. THE SCHISM OF THE CHURCH

  • Christianity was divided between the western Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church.
  • Caused the excommunication of a Byzantine Emperor.
  • Eventually helped create a new Slavic nation.
  • Eastern Orthodox missionaries created the Cyrillic alphabet so that slavs could read the bible.
