Emotional/Behavioral Disorders

  • There is no universally accepted definition.
  • Book states: “A chronic condition characterized by behaviors that significantly differ from age norms and community standards to such a degree that educational performance is adversely affected.”

Classification

  • Externalizing Disorders: acting out, disruptive, aggressive behavior
  • Internalizing Disorders: anxiety, withdrawal, fearfulness, etc. reflecting a person's internal state

Examples include:

  • Adjustment Disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • OCD
  • Conduct Disorders
  • Anorexia
  • Bulimia
  • Bipolar
  • PTSD

Prevalence

  • 6.4% of SpEd students are diagnosed E/BD
  • 0.5% of the school aged children are diagnosed E/BD
  • Boys are generally diagnosed EBD more often than girls

Tips for handling Kids with EBD

  • Keep class rules simple and clear
  • Reward positive behaviors
  • Allow for mini-breaks
  • Fair treatment for all
  • Use motivational strategies
  • Be understanding
