ELEMENT

ELEMENT

  • Substance that can't be broken down
  • Made up of only one type of particle
  • Every element has its set of characteristic properties
  • Classified by its properties
  • Shares the properties of other elements in the group

The three group in Elements are
Metals, Nonmetals & Metalloids

EXAMPLE OF ELEMENTS

C : CARBON

COMPOUND

COMPOUND

  • Pure substance made of 2 or more elements that are chemically combined
  • Have to go through a chemical change to become a compound
  • New substance has different properties from the element that form it
  • Elements join in s specific ratio ( ex: H2O = H:O = 2:1 )
  • Compounds can be broken by chemical changes

EXAMPLE OF COMPOUNDS

NA + CL =NACl

MIXTURE

MIXTURE

  • Combination of 2 or more substance not chemically combined
  • Each substance keeps its original indentity
  • Can be separated ( Distillation, Magnet & Centrifuge )

3 TYPES OF MIXTURES

SOLUTION, SUSPENSION & COLLOIDS

EXAMPLE OF MIXTURE

METALS FOR ELEMENT

  • Always shiny
  • Good conductors of thermal energy and electric current
  • Malleable ( sheets ) Ductile ( wire )
  • Examlpe of Metals: gold & silver

NONMETALS FOR ELEMENT

  • Always dull
  • Poor conductors of thermal energy and electric current
  • Non malleable & Brittle
  • Example of Nonmetals: neon, graphite & sulphur

METALLOIDS FOR ELEMENT

  • Always be Malleable and ductile
  • Shiny or dull
  • Have properties of both metals and nonmetals
  • Semi conductors
  • Some conduct thermal energy and electric current ( Boron & Silicon )

SOLUTION FOR MIXTURE

  • Appears to be One substance but is really 2 or more
  • Particles are very small
  • Substance dissolved : solute
  • Substance in which solute is dissolved : solvent
  • Example of Solutions: Air, Brass & Salt water

COLLOIDS FOR MIXTURE

  • Share properties of solution and suspension
  • Particles are dispersed evenly but not settle out
  • Example of Colloids: jello, whipped cream & fog

SUSPENSION FOR MIXTURE

  • Particles do not dissolve
  • Large enough to block light
  • A mixture in which particles are big enough to settle out
