What is an ecosystem?

  • An area made of living and non living things that interact with each other.
  • Often categorized by climate and condition of soil.
  • In an ecosystem, each animal has its own niche, or role to play.

Scales of ecosystems (examples)

  • Micro: pond, puddle, tree trunk, under a rock, etc. 
  • Messo: forests or large lake 
  • Biome: rain forest with all of its features

Food chains

  • All living things need energy to grow and to live right?
  • Describes  the way that different organisms eat each other
  • Example:    grass----->zebra---->lion

Producers and consumers

  • Plants are producers
  • Animals are consumers

-Ivores

  • Herbivores- animals that only eat plants
  • Carnivore- animals that only eat other animals
  • Omnivores- animals that eat both plants and other animals

Decomposers

  • Bacteria and fungi are decomposers
  • Eat decaying matter and dead plants
  • After the decomposes decompose themselves,
  • they turn into nutrients for the soil (fertilizer).
