PRESENTATION OUTLINE
the endangered species i will be focusing on is the red squirrel
the natural habitat of the red squirrel is a coniferous forest. they’ve been present in ireland and the UK for over ten thousand years.
in 1911 the grey squirrel was introduced to the UK and ireland by American travelers. the grey squirrel carries a Parapoxvirus which doesn’t affect their health but often kills red squirrels. this has caused a decline in red squirrels.
the NPWS has put in place measures to protect the red squirrel:
meausres by the NPWS
- ensure the needs of red squirrels are being considered before approving planning permission applications
- developing “codes of best forestry practice”
- forming a policy with regard to translocation of red squirrels
the main animal that is in competition with the red squirrel is the North American grey squirrel. they compete for food and nesting space. the red squirrel also has to compete with the wood pecker for nesting space.
the red squirrel eats insects, seeds, bark, nuts, fruits, mushrooms and pine seeds/cones.
The main predators of the red squirrel are the fox and many predatory birds.
