  • Resulted in scarce food for soldiers and civilians
  • South created large amounts of money
  • Decreased value meant inflation
  • Inflation led to starvation.

DURING THE CIVIL WAR

  • Had enough food for soldiers and civilians
  • Factories made weapons and clothing
  • Gov. Needed money created bonds
  • Bonds backed with gold made it a good investment
  • Gov. Made it illegal to turn down money for goods and services

  • Became a colonel before appointed to general
  • Lincoln asked him to be the general of entire union
  • Surrendered to keep more men being killed

ABRAHAM LINCOLN

  • President during civil war (1860-65)
  • Commander-in-chief of Union army
  • Issued emancipation proclamation
  • Revered as a great president
  • Some disliked because of his view on slavery

ULYSSES S. GRANT

  • General of Union army
  • Hated defeat
  • Became president later but felt he did better in the military
  • Trained at West Point academy
  • 2nd lieutenant during Mexican-American war
