-Highers standards of living, full employement and conditions of social and economic progress and development.

-Coordinates the economic , social and related work of the United Nations Fund

-Make or initiate studies and reports with respect to international economic, social, cultural, educational, health and related matters and make recommendations with respect to any such matters to the General Assembly, to the Members of the United Nations.




-Make recommendations for the purpose of promoting respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all.

PRESIDENTS

HIS EXCELLENCY MARTIN SAJDIK WAS ELECTED SEVENTIETH PRESIDENT OF THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL ON 14 JANUARY 2014. AMBASSADOR SAJDIK IS CURRENTLY THE AMBASSADOR AND PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF AUSTRIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS IN NEW YORK.

SESSIONS

The council holds several short sessions, ad hoc meetings, round tables and panel discussions throughout the year, to prepare for its four week substantive session in July. The July session is held annually in alternative years in New York and Geneva. The substantive session is organized in five segments: The High-level Segment; Coordination Segment; Operational Activities Segment; Humanitarian Affairs Segment; and the General Segment.

*ECOSOC also includes the children in its activities. The participants are youth delegates that conform the Children and Youth Major Group, youth representatives from Member States, including from National Youth Councils, representatives of regional youth organizations as well as youth-led and youth focused organizations and networks, including those in consultative status with ECOSOC. What they do is featuring various dialogs sessions where they can talk about the problems and facts that we face today.
