WHAT IS A WETLAND?

A wetland is a land area that is covered with water.
Wetlands are important to the environment because they help with water purification, flood control and shoreline stability.

Wetlands have a lot of plant and animals living in them. Wetlands occur naturally on every continent except Antarctica. The largest wetlands are the Amazon River basin, the Western Siberian Plain and the Pantanal.

The water found in wetlands can be freshwater, brackish or saltwater. The main wetland types are swamps, marshes, bogs and fens. There are various types of plants that are found in wetlands some examples are Sea and Eel grasses and Water Lilies.

There are also various types of animals that live in wetlands such as Fish and Amphibians such as Frogs, Reptiles like Alligators and Crocodiles, snakes, lizards, turtles, small mammals and insects are also found in wetlands.

Other types of vegetation found in wetlands are various types of Algae and Plankton.
The temperatures in wetlands depend on where it is located. Many wetlands are in places that are between the North and South poles as well as the Equator. The amount of rain that a wetland gets varies according to the area that it's in.

A lot of people visit various wetland areas to learn about wildlife and vegetation. Wetlands are interesting and good for the environment.
