Purpose of This Proposed PD
- Google Apps for Education training.
- Training in how to use Google Apps for Education for the purpose of Proficiency-Based Assessment.
What Will We Learn At This PD?
- Discuss Google Apps for Eduction (GAFE) and how to use it appropriately.
- How can we use GAFE for Proficiency-Based Assessment, PLPs, and Portfolios?
This slide gives a brief overview of the two main topics that will be discussed during this professional development. The full day session will be divided into morning and afternoon mini-sessions. In the morning, teachers will have the opportunity to learn about what Google Apps for Education (GAFE) can do and why it is the preferred suite of applications for our SD. It must be stressed that while this session will discuss the benefits of using GAFE, it is not the only solution and teachers are free to use whatever solution best suits their individual needs.
The afternoon sessions will be focused mini sessions on how to use the GAFE suite to achieve the goals of Proficiency-Based Assessment.

What is GAFE again?
Here we will give a brief reminder of what exactly GAFE is. It is a suit of applications offered by Google for free to schools. It includes all of the elements of a traditional office suite of applications, while also offering cloud-based archiving, website hosting, and powerful collaboration features. Most recently, Google Classroom was released and included in GAFE, giving teachers a free LMS that completely integrates with GAFE.

This slide lists the main applications that are found in GAFE. Drive is a file storage infrastructure that allows for the creation and sharing of files and folders.
Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms are the backbone of the Google office suite. Docs is a word processor, Sheets is a spreadsheet program, Slides is a presentation creator, and Forms is a questionnaire development tool.
Google Classroom is a Learning Management System where teachers can set up classrooms, create, share, and collect assignments, as well as offer direct feedback.
Gmail is perhaps the most well known app in GAFE. It is an email application and a users gmail address is the primary method of communication within GAFE.

Why Use Google Apps?
- Portability: They are available anywhere on practically any device
- Collaboration: They offer strong collaboration tools that allow teachers and students to work together and give and receive feedback.
- Integration: Third party assessment tools can be accessed through GAFE and work can be saved to Google Drive.
Google Apps offer quite a few advantages over installed software and school networks. First, they provide portability. Google Apps can be accessed on nearly every type of internet connected device which allows for more students and teachers to connect without the need of fancy computer equipment.
Second, Google Apps are made for collaboration. With built in group editing tools, students and teachers can choose who has editing, commenting, or just view only privileges for their work. Further, students and teachers can collaborate using this function in real time. Meaning that students and teachers can work together on a project at home, school, or wherever.
Third, Google Apps have integrated Single Sign On with numerous third party applications including Khan Academy, LucidPress, Nearpod, WeVideo, Screencastify, and more.

Google Classroom
A Learning Management System with powerful collaboration and feedback tools
Google Classroom is a LMS that takes advantage of the benefits of the GAFE infrastructure. It allows teachers to create individual classrooms, to develop and share assignments with students. When students take part in these classrooms, assignments are generated in their Google Drive and ready to be shared with their teacher when completed. Teachers can also share feedback, make announcements, and hold discussion threads.

Google Drive
A cloud based suite of office applications including Docs, Forms, Sheets, and Slides
Google Drive takes full advantage of the cloud. Users can save anything they want to their Drive including documents, school work, images, videos, and other files. They can also share these files using the GAFE share button. Students have unlimited storage so they can store just about anything and never have to worry about deleting it to free up space.

Apps and Add-ons
- Chrome Web Store with thousands of apps that can be used by your students
- Add-ons integrate powerful tools into existing GAFE apps
Google recently released a series of add-ons that allow for users to customize their Google Drive experience. These add-ons are available through the individual apps. Further, the Chrome Web Store offers a variety of applications that can be used for assessment such as note taking apps, time management apps, presentation creation tools, and media creation tools.

Using GAFE for Proficiency-Based Assessment
The second half of the day will be used to discuss, in small groups, how to utilize the GAFE suite of apps for Proficiency-Based Assessment. The goal of Proficiency-Based Assessment is for students to understand where they are on a continuum of proficiency. GAFE allows students to see their progress, interact with their teachers and peers freely, and use multiple tools to reflect and demonstrate mastery.

Proposed Scheduling for PD
- This PD should be offered as a multi-session course.
- Day 1 - AM and PM
- Day 2 and beyond - Mid-Year Refreshers focusing on successes and failures.
- Continuing - Reflection activities supervised by Tech Director and building principals
This is a proposed schedule for this PD. This PD is scheduled for a full day with AM and PM sessions with monthly or quarterly check-ins that will focus on reflection of practice and addressing additional training needs.
