THE EARLY YEARS OF POE

  • He was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • His mothers name was Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins
  • She was an actress
  • She died in 1811 when Poe was only 2 years old

FOSTER FAMILY

  • Since he was so young when his mother passed, he was put in a foster home
  • His foster parents were Mr. and Mrs. John Allan
  • They were successful merchants
  • John Allan died in 1834

POE'S EDUCATION

  • In 1815, he went to a boarding school in Chelsea, England
  • He then went to the University of Virginia
  • He left because he could not pay his tuition

POE'S FIRST WORKS

  • Poe's first published work was "Tamerlane and other Poems" in 1827
  • He then published "Al Aaraaf, Towerlane and Minor Poems" in 1829
  • He got an editors job at Southern Literary Messenger in 1835
  • In 1841, he published "The Murder in the Rue Magus"
  • "The Raven" was published in 1845

POES ARMY DAYS

  • He enlisted in the army in 1830
  • He was then court-martialed from West Point for ditching class

POES LOVE LIFE

  • Poe married his 13 year old cousin Virginia in 1836
  • In 1837, they moved to New York to find a job
  • Virginia died in February of 1847
  • In 1848, he became engaged to Sarah Reyster
  • He then became engaged to Sarah Helen Whitman in 1849

POES DEATH

  • Poe died on October 7, 1849
  • His last words were, "This death was almost a suicide, a suicide prepared for a long time"
  • One theory of his death was the effects of alcoholism
  • His death still remains a mystery
