1810

  • Egdars parents separate
  • Mother takes custody of children

1811

  • Edgar's mother dies
  • Mr. & Mrs. John Allan adopt Edgar

1815

  • Edgar goes to England for school

1820

  • Edgar returns to United States
  • Continues schooling

1823

  • Edgar attends academy of William Burke
  • Succeeds in athletics

1826

  • Edgar attends the University of Virginia
  • Attends as Edgar Poe (not Edgar Allan Poe)

1827

  • Can afford to go to the University
  • Edgar is forced to drop out
  • Writes and prints 1st book "Tamerlanes and other poems"
  • Can't support himself
  • Joins the United States army

1828

  • Does well in the army
  • Attains the rank of Sergeant Major

1829

  • Mrs. Allan dies, Edgar returns home
  • Poe and John Allan temporarily reconcile differences
  • Edgar applied to West Point, and John Allan sponsors him

1831

  • Edgar is kicked out of West Point

1832

  • Edgar submits a number of stories to magezines
  • Stories are rejected

  • Poe send a desperate letter to John Allan
  • He asked for help and was ignored

  • Wins a contest for "The Manuscript Found in a Bottle"
  • Because of contest, Poe finally gets a job

1836

  • Poe Marries his cousin Virginia

  • Poe's first story is published but he recieves no money
  • "Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque"

  • Poe wins $100 prize for "The Gold Bug"

1845

  • Poe works 14 hours a day
  • But still can't make a living in NY

  • Sues a paper libel and wins $225

1847

  • Virginia dies from Tuberculosis
