What is the Edmund Fitzgerald?

  • U.S. Cargo ship used to carry iron ore across the Great Lakes
  • Was the largest ship on Lake Superior for many years
  • 729 feet long
  • Made June of 1958
  • Sunk November 10 1975

THE STORM

  • Started as a low pressure system in the southern plains
  • Moved north east until it was directly over lake superior
  • Caused hurricane force winds over 85 mph

THE SINKING

  • The Edmund Fitzgerald sunk to the bottom of the lake on November 10 1975
  • 30 Foot waves swept over the deck
  • The ship snapped into two pieces and sank

EFFECTS

  • The entire crew of 29 men all died
  • All the iron ore the ship was carrying was lost
  • The families of the crew were devestated

MONETARY DAMAGE

  • The ship was worth several hundred thousand dollars
  • The iron ore it carried was worth thousands
  • The lives lost were priceless
