Critical Elements Essential for Improvement of Instruction in Our School

  • 8: Teachers within the school jointly plan series of lessons, with learning intentions and success criteria related to worthwhile curricular specifications. (Hattie, 2012)
  • 11: Teachers talk with each other about the impact of their teaching, based on evidence of students progress, and about how to maximize their impact with all students. (Hattie, 2012)

Why do we need improvement in this area?

  • Effective planning involves having clear learning goals, developing a good assessment and providing accurate feedback to students about how to be successful.
  • Teachers need to teach the students to set mastery goals
  • Success criteria let students know when they have achieved the learning goal.

Recommendations to Achieve this Element:

  • Learn the strategies to show students how to set and write personal SMART goals. SMART goals are: S = Specific M = Measurable A = Attainable R = Relevant, Rigorous, Realistic, and Results Focused T = Timely and Trackable

2: “LEARNING TARGET WALLS”

  • The teacher creates a LTW.
  • Writes the lesson target for the day.
  • Students and the teacher come up with the goals for the lesson written in the first person.
  • Using LTWs will help students feel as they are part of their own learning, and also they will know what is expected from them all the time.

Element 11: “Teachers talk with each other about the impact of their teaching, based on evidence of student progress, and about how to maximize their impact with all students”

WHY DO we nEED IMPROVEMENT IN THIS AREA?

  • The most powerful way of planning is when teachers work together. Are we given enough time to accomplish this?
  • I feel that in my school teachers are not given social and emotional permission to be learners with their colleagues and administrators.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO ACHIEVE THIS ELEMENT:

  • We need to work together purposely.
  • Keep in mind that in modern-learning sharing and collaborating will benefit our students.
  • Administrators have to find ways to make teachers feel comfortable admitting when they don't know necessary information or lack some abilities.
  • I recommend the administrators in my school read the book: Upgrade Your Curriculum. Practical Ways to Transform Unit and Engage Students. By Janet Hale and Michael Fisher.
