  • Their schools were heavily underfunded
  • Many of their schools had leaky roofs and sagging floors
  • The only books they had were hand-me-downs from white schools
  • Many schools had no books at all

  • Many people believed they did not deserve an education
  • They were limited on what they could be taught about freedom and equality
  • White people did not want blacks to know what equality was
  • In TKAM the Finch kids don't go to school with black children

BLACK EDUCATION HISTORICAL EVENTS (DAVID NORBY)

  • In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled segregation in public schools as unconstitutional
  • Some universities still required federal urging to open their enrollment to blacks during the 1950's
  • In 1968, San Francisco State University became the first college to establish a black studies department
  • In the late 1960's, blacks were choosing to go to predominately white colleges instead of historically black colleges
