First Year Transitions

Moving In, Through, and Out
My work with First Year Students in the Center for First Year Students at the University of Colorado Boulder and Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) was extremely rewarding. First Year Students have such energy, passion and excitement for their upcoming college experience, that it gave me the energy to steward them through their first year transition. Many students come to orientation thinking they are going to major in Biology, Chemistry or other Pre-Health majors and to go to medical school. It is not until Orientation that they realize those majors require advanced math and science courses. Orientation is the beginning of transitioning into college life and teaching students about the academic and social requirements of being a college student.

Advising Philosophy

Genuineness, Empathy, Positivity
Quality academic advising is vital because it offers an opportunity to work with students from different backgrounds and fosters student success by providing additional teaching and engagement opportunities outside the classroom. Based upon the work of Carl Rogers, I employ “person-centered” techniques when working with a student to ensure that their individual needs are being met in accordance with the academic standards of the university. My role in a student’s university experience is to facilitate
opportunities for students to derive meaning from their academics in the hopes they will become “lifelong learners”.

Diversity

Differences are Opportunities for Identity Development and Meaning Making
My Anthropology bachelor's degree and cross-cultural experiences have taught me to value diversity and celebrate the differences between each of us. Anthropology is the scientific study of human beings and their creations, both physical and psychological. Each student has a different history and worldview giving each student a unique perspective, which makes the work of Academic Advisers difficult, yet even more rewarding. With my anthropology background and international experience, I offer a perspective which is understanding of culture, diversity and multicultural settings. Advising allows me and my students to share our experiences and learn from each other. When working with students our differences become great topics of conversation rather than something which separates us. Students and coworkers find me to be attentive, communicative, open-minded, and respectful of their views.

Advising Increases Retention!

Retention is NOT the GOAL!

Engagement
