PRESENTATION OUTLINE

EDWARD THE CONFESSOR BECAME KING OF ENGLAND-1042

BY GINGER, ELLI, ISABELLA AND LOUIS

EDWARD

HOW IMPORTANT WAS THIS EVENT TO PEOPLE WHO LIVED AT THE TIME?

  • It would have been really important because it was a change of leadership so the system would have been different. Edward built what is now known as the House of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Edward was also a Norman (Dutch) ruling England which wasn't very common

How many people were affected?

  • All of England
  • Why??
  • Because he was King and ruled over them

To what degree were people’s lives affected?

  • Much of his reign was peaceful
  • Battles with the Scottish and the Welsh were not very frequent.
  • The finances and trading were well managed
  • However, when Edward introduced some Norman friends to court, some courts particularly the courts of Mercia and Wessex, which both held considerable power.

HOW WIDESPREAD AND LONG LASTING WERE THE EFFECTS?

  • He put lots of Norman people into Portman positions
  • He didn't rule actively but preferred to stay with monks and lived that kind of life based around religion. That's where he got the name 'Edward the Confessor' because a confessor was implied as someone who was seen more as a monk rather than a king
  • But the Earl of Wessex Godwin did most of the ruling
  • He is best remember for building the Palace of Westminster which has become the present Houses of Parliament

Can the effects be still felt today?

  • Yes
  • He built the Place of Westminster which has grown into the President House of Parliament and Westminster Abbey
